Hey! Noob from Essex  I am currently driving a Renault Clio - 1.4 shell (still have the badges on the side  ) with Renaultsport 182 conversion with 50bhp NOS kit.    I bought this as a 1.4 and have made it what it is over the past 3 years (only 2ltr in this colour) and I absoloutely love it. It's fun in the corners and pulls a decent 14.5 second 1/4 mile but I'm feeling the need to get something a little quicker and the 3 MPS (MK1) is where I'm looking to go. To get any quicker in my current car I'm looking at spending thousands for not a lot of bhp in return so I think I need to leave N/A behind and get involved in some boost action  . The insurance turns out to be just over £600 cheaper which amazed me but as a conversion mine is tricky to insure so thats a bonus. Just wanted to get some basic stats on these..I like to drag my cars so has anyone got a 1/4 mile figure for one of these? Out of interest. Also I've heard the road tax and fuel consumption is abit of a killer? The clio is my daily atm but I am currently restoring a 205 gti so would more than likely be using that as a daily driver and the Mazda for fun. Basically just after a bit of persuasion to leave the clio behind and start with something new  . Cheers, Vicky.

Hi vicky, recognise ur car from cliosport.
Take it u like ur sleepers....
Fuel isnt too bad imo, mine is around 350bhp and if anything it better on fuel than the megane 225 i was running at the same time if u were going easy in both cars i could only manage 37 in standard meg and have acheived 41 in mps on 60 mile drive. Having said that if i was to nail both cars am sure the mps would be thirstier.
Tax is frustrating tbh but the way to look at it is any modern hothatch will be £250 a year so u have to pay a 3-4 pound a week premium to drive a MPS (thats how i convince myself its worth it!)
Am planning on running mine on a 1/4 day next weekend if it stays dry but its on an old local airfield so surface is poor. Did it earlier in year and only got 13.9. @ 106 so was disappointed but a standard mps there only got 15.1 in same conditions. Am sure at pod a standard mps would get very low 14's if not high 13's

Have been reading your thread which is very impressive, especially your torque figures! Taxwise, I could justify it a little more by saying that I'm saving £600 on insurance which is good. I wouldn't be too disheartened by that 13.9 if I were you. I went to a local strip during the summer with an M5 and his best time was 14 dead so I'd be chuffed knowing that you can beat that. Hmm, 15.1 the clio would've said bye to that, but I guess you can't go by drag times as they are all driver dependant, need to launch well to get a good time. What are the tuning options for these? I see yours is highly modded but what gains are seen from a custom map on a standard car?

I have gone from a old Valver which I spent a lot on, to a 04 plate Clio sport, then to a few cheap family runabouts to the 3 MPS. The Mazda has me completely smitten at the moment it feels more of a grown up car which is only a good thing. It might not have as many off the shelf products as you will be used too thou. IE most stuff needs importing but there really isn't much else I would have chosen. If you get one you will be the same you will love it!

Ha thanks  £600 saving on insurance?! Does make me feel a little better that a RWD 400bhp BMW (presuming e39?) only got 14... but still am sure something wasnt quite right with one of the aspects of a good 1/4 run! There is a you tube clip of a car remarkably like mine doing a beep test on mway against a superchipped 182... oh here it is http://youtu.be/_C4B1IyYjA8 (if that works) but not entirely fair as i believe both cars were in 4th and @50mph so not in the revvy clios favour. But a similar video against a 223bhp CTR test was done higher up the revs in 3rd.. A custom map for a standard car should see 290+bhp. I personally would get a decent FMIC/TMIC and induction the get it mapped then you should be well over 310bhp.... Skiptownrat has really good results from his mods.

Hi and welcome. Don't know much about tuning, but from what i've read on the forum, the MK1 3MPS seems to be quite simple to push past the 300 mark, compared to others. Also the standard car is just awesome!

That would appear to be possible with an SRI + TIP + Versatune. Bargain at £600.
