Hi guys and girls,

I have been a fan of Mazda for years, I have previously owned a MX-5 and now own a mk1 Berkeley mx-5 after selling my first one to a friend, I also own a RX8, and now have bought a mk2 MPS (3) so almost got the full set haha, it's in black and it's so good, there do seem to be a couple of things I would like to have a look at, when I bought it I wanted something to tinker with and I think this is going to be a bit of a toy, it had a bit of a ruble on tick over, after some V-Nito and some motorway driving that's getting better however! The oil was lovely and clean when I bought it but now is already starting to turn a merky black so I suspect it's not had a decent oil change ever in its life (full Mazda service history) the spark plus have never been changed (45k) I know there supposed to do 50k but I will never leave a set in that long! I'm planning on changing out the intercooler for a cork speed one or the likes, and putting a panel filter in it,

I think it would be worth investigating that rumble on tick over before anything. If it is the timing chain then the vvt probably hasn't been changed then the sooner the better. There is a kit available.

Thank you everyone for replying, the 8 is off the road, nothing wrong with it just an average 12mpg does start to annoy you haha, it's an odd thing with the rumble, I'm a very paranoid person so every little thing must be investigated, it's less of a rumble and more of a murmer, it's like a very very slight misfire and is only at tick over, I will do my own oil change and spark plug change and air filter soon, I might even go for a fuel filter if there not terrible to change (had to do one on a MX5 that hadn't been changed in most likely the life of the car) and see if it gets corrected after that, then I might just pick myself up a COBB access port and be able to see what the computer is telling the big bangy thing

Also on a side note I have watched maybe three videos on YouTube relating to the timing chain noise and my car doesn't sound like that at all on start up or while running, you can only feel it, there is no related noise, I believe it might be (from some experience with petrol engines) related to the air filter being more dirty then my over half after a good night out drinking and a lack of spark plug change? With the engine at tick over the least amount of air is being pulled through the intake, meaning a very clogged up filter would cause an issue with the car trying to idle? I am genuinely happy to listen to any and all recommendations and advice of course, I have always tinkered with engines, even sometimes modded them, modified car insurance for this car is exceptionally cheap and cheerful so I have already told them I have a full exhaust system and intake ready for whenever I want to add it haha

Hello and welcome. :)

Hope you enjoy the MPS.

There's an MX5 and RX8 section on the forum for pics etc of those as well.

I didn't think our cars had a fuel filter.

The MPS does indeed but it is a filter sock that surrounds the fuel pump and sits in the fuel tank. You need Mazda specific tools to remove the pump / filter assembly.
