Make sure the car is properly serviced and VVT has been done and it's all running well before you start modding. You'll only run into problems later!

Before even thinking about doing the VVT please have it checked (easy to do yourself) as it could be fine, far to many people just do it for doings sake and at +£500 its a lot of money for something that doesn't need doing yet. http://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/01-010-11.pdf
