Hi Chaps

I got up this morning without any inclination of what a 3 MPS is or was. It's now the evening and I'm thinking of buying a 57 plate, I added a post on another car forum about what hot hatch to get for £6k and there were a lot of praises for the 3 MPS, one of the chaps is local, and got a 57 plate MPS 72k on the clock, Bose system and some kind of aero package.

I've had a look around the web and the reviews are a bit Marmite, could you guys give me a quick insight into why one of these over and ST or R26, Golf GTi etc, said car is £5.5k, does that sound a reasonable price?

I like the stealth idea by the way

My advice would be to test drive them all and see which you prefer, as far as most of us on here (if not all) are concerned we drove other cars and chose the MPS everyone will have different reasons.

For me I would have either a 3 or 6, ended up with a 6 as a ticked all of my boxes. Personally I like the fact it's not a car you see every day and I think you get a lot of car for the money.

I like the fact I rarely see another 6 and when I do it's Kenny which is a bit annoying as it's better than mine.

Ha ha I'd say the MPS is for those who like to be different, I like how rare the car is, downside is it's a rare car so getting someone who knows the cars well enough to work on can be hard

Pros and cons

Hi Muzza,

:welcome: to the :mpsoc:

If you like stealth hot hatch then you found the perfect match.

If you prefer a stealth awd fast saloon then I'd recommend a 6.

The mark 2 mps 3 bonnet sort of gives away that it's a very fast car though

Mps draws less attention, not a chav / Bobby magnet and always have that element of surprise.

If image isn't an issue then Subaru delivers more power out of the box, but there's no stopping modifying a mps to 500 bhp, yes 500 bhp! (not a typo  )

All the best,
T

I have always liked the stealth idea of a car, I built a Lotus Elise with 360hp Honda Integra Type R engine supercharged and chargecooled, that was hilarious on track against the Porsche GT3 guy.

Truth be told my budget is a bit higher, I've just sold my mk1 mexico and clio cup track car, would I be better off going for an early mk2, how much do they go for?

I was on the verge of either buying a mk2 Focus RS or a FD2 Civic Type R before i bought the mps.

Took one test drive to convince me not to bother with either the ford or honda which i had both driven a few times.

Ignore the UK reviews if you dont drive a Golf GTI its not worth driving if you listen to UK Motoring Journo's, they all bum VW.
Read and watch the reviews from the USA and Australia and you will see that the Mazdaspeeds were THE hot hatch to have up until very recently.

A couple of reasons I bought the mkii 3 mps

1. These cars are at the comfortably quicker performance end of the hot hatch scale, on the road they hold their own against rivals and has most of its rivals licked in a straight line.
2. The level of kit you get standard is unsurpassed by any other manufacture making a hot hatch and to get these levels you have to pay WAY more in something like a golf gti.
3. The 3 MPS is brilliant as a powerful comfortable long distance cruiser (I travel from manc to Wales every few weekends and its brilliant for it, stock it on cruise control and cruise to some tunes :D )
4. They tune easily, spend just over 1k and you have a reliable 320bhp, basic turbo upgrades on top of the 1 bolt ons get you running 360-380bhp no issues
5. Insurance is cheap, my first years premium I paid was £800, bear in mind the focus and FD2 were £600 a year more to insure at the time.
6. Rarity. You will only every see 1 MPS to the average 40-50 Focus ST's, Civic Type R, Golf GTI etc etc
7. The forums and owners club, easily by far and away the most close knit community I have a pleasure of being a part of :mpsoc: :mpsoc: :mpsoc: :mpsoc:

Does £5.5k sound an okay price for a 72k car. Is 72k mileage okay on these, should I look at paying a bit more for lower mileage. I will only be doing 2k a year. I will be modifying the engine

I'm going to see it on Saturday afternoon, the guy owns a garage and has done some of the servicing himself....although the last one at 70k miles was done at the main dealer

And my final question to you good people is that the 70k service was done by the Mazda main dealer however the previous 4 the owner carried out himself as he owns a garage, is this okay or should it ring alarm bells.

I'm seeing the car on Saturday afternoon.

That is fascinating, how long did it take to build it?

Is the mps going to be your project car?

I think you can haggle it down to 5K for it, goodluck with the test drive mate
