Hi all, I'm new. I've not bought a Mazda 6 mps yet.But I think I might have to. Can't think of anything else which matches it for performance and practicality. The missus won't drive a Scooby as she wants understated, not shouty. she wants a 330ci, I want fun and best in class (suspect whenever I pull up next to an m3 in a 330 I'll just be disappointed that I didn't buy the m3). I was thinking old skool civic type r but only 4 seats isnt really practical enough. So...Mazda 6 mps ticks all the boxes. My question to you guys is a) have you ever pulled up next to bmw330 and thought 'wish I bought that instead', or any other car for that matter? And b) I've seen bbr in brackley do a 320hp tune on stock internals. I read the rods are soft as butter, is 320 on stock motor ok?! Thanks guys. Convince me a 6 is the way to go ;) Rick

Hi and welcome to A stock 6 mps has plenty of performance to embarrass a 330i. And the rods are good so long as you dont start going to silly power like Kenny said, 320bhp doesnt even start to stretch the internals, clutch or gearbox and so long as you dont go WOT under 3k in the higher gears you will help your rods too

Spot on, thanks guys! Pretty much settled on the idea of a 6 now. Any useful tips for when I get it? Read that the timing belt/chain(?) Has a squishy tentioner, is it a case of replace like for like but at short intervals, or is there a solid replacement fir the oem one?
Must admit, still haven't looked through the buying guides. Only just settling on the idea of a 6 over anything else. Like the idea of an impreza ppp but 'er indoors says nothing too boy racer-esq. Apparently I am yet to 'grow up' lol.

I was in exactly the same boat as you a couple of years ago, quite fancied an Impreza but it probably would have resulted in divorce! Anyway I looked around and ended up with my 6 which has been a great car. Thanks to a cheeky few mods it is now a fair bit quicker than the impreza that I would have ended up with. It is also a lot more practical! Maybe if you put your location up someone nearby will offer to take you for a spin in theirs to help make your mind up

Cheers bud. I'm in Hampshire. Couple of garages within an hour from me have some for sale, with try a couple before I buy one. Probably try some low mileage ones outside of my pricerange to feel what they should feel like, then when testing cheaper ones I'll know how what it should be like if well maintained. With regards to tweaking these (I can't help but fiddle with cars), where do you start? Power? Handling? Stopping? Which is the weakest aspect? I'm not one for chasing numbers (although never got the astra past 280bhp so that would be nice), more into making a car well balanced. With the astra I did handling first, then brakes, then power. I miss having the option to accelerate. Been in a zafira diesel for 2 years now. But it's going to make space on the drive

[quote="~Divine~Wind~" Oh and the red one is the fastest 6 ;)[/quote]
Is red faster than black if the black has the 'go faster strips' mod? Gotta be at least 10bhp there :p
Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Appreciate it.
Just gotta wait for the buyer to collect and pay for the zafira now. Painful wait, I want a new toy NOW lol. Gonna be a long old wait though, only gettin 3500 for the zaf, so reckon I'm on a 4k budget for a 6. Tough to find a gooden for that I think. Waiting game for the right one to come up I guess.

Welcome aboard.... Do your research and don't rush into it, best to get one that's had the VVT already replaced as this shows the owner looked after it, along with alloys in good condition, all the tyres the same with even tread etc. I'd recommend waiting for a forum member to sell up as it would likely come with a few bolt on mods too Stock engine internals holding up well here... I hope

Cheers guys. I have sort of considered the 3. Think the 6 is mote understated though, and that's what she wants. I think she's keen on a coupe/saloon rather than hatch. I like the 4wd as always had front drive so I'll be nice to drive so.ergo g different/solid in the bends (the astra certainly wasn't solid in the bends, just understeered. And the 306gti6 I had a 19 was great until it let go, then it really did let go. I wasnt good enough to control that and wrote it off pretty quick :'( ). she wants a traffic light rocket ship and doesn't care about corners so the 4wd is spot on for het. I just want to giggle while I drive which I'm hoping a 6 will make me do

Another weak spot on the early 6 is the clutch. It can seem heavy and sharp with a high take up point. Those made after July 06 have a modified version which behaves normally. I had mine replaced under warranty but many weren`t. Expensive job.
Don`t forget that the pre-23/03/06 registered cars are only £280 road tax.

Welome along mate.
As already said.....get a 6!
I was torn between the 6mps and an Impreza spec D.....like you, the wife wasn't keen on the Scooby, so went with the 6 and glad I did. Sure you'll gt a better 6mps for your budget than a 330 as well.
