Thanks guys and gals. Still loving the MPS!! Best car I've ever owned. Period.
And that's coming from a string of GOLF's and an S3.
Awful cars - don't think I'd go VAG again!

Welcome to the forum mate.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but what makes the 3 soo much better than an S3 , GTi ?
I've came from the VAG scene , owning 3 Boras, so sort of, The 2.8V6 was a beaut. But old so she had to go.

I've had:
Mk2 GTI Mk3 GTI Mk4 GTI T MK5 Polo TSI MK5 GTI DSG 8L S3
So, I think I can speak with a certain level of experience here when I say this - with the exception of the MK2 and the S3 - they are all very un-engaging cars.
However, they all follow a common theme. The build quality is that of perceived quality. They all feel robust and well made, but in actual fact are absolute heaps of junk. Constant part failures, rust, god awful customer service and expensive parts.
My MK5 was a 2006 model and had wheel arch rust along with a myriad of problems. VW refused to cover wheel arch rust under their 12 year corrosion guarantee stating it was a mechanical fault?!
Finally - they are just plain bland. The MPS feels like a hot hatch should - engaging and fun, and although the VAG interior is well above the mazda's in quality - it's a small price to pay.

I think I understand now why they sell and why testers love them. It`s because if you are about to shell out a lot of money on a car you like to "feel" that it won`t go wrong and cost you loads. So a showroom experience which gives you that reassurance counts for a lot and overrides other realities.VAG marketing over many years has further engrained this perception of build quality.

Yep - got it in one. It's like my MK5, barely older than my 3.
It only had 60+k miles on the clock.
It had a juddering DSG (apparantely normal according to VW), broken thermostat, rust on both front arches (mechanical fault?!) and also an intermittent bulb warning fault.
That was an 06 plate car with FVWSH bar one stamp.

Oh yeah - and it had a cam follower fault which is an inherent design fault of the FSIT engine - which VW admit to, but do naff all about. Paid for that then sold it. I'm sure MT1 will be more than happy to reinforce my argument, haha! In the time he had the S3 I guess he spent well over £1,000 in repairs. I bought it off him (against his constant warnings) and had spent around £2,000 in repairs at the last count. This was a meticulously cared for car with FSH. I actually added up the reciepts for the car since it was new for repair work and it worked out at around £12,000 in 12 years. Then MT1 found more receipts, so probably £14,000 on 12 years in repairs!

Without draining my phone battery with a reply. I hate vag with a passion.
My mk2 golf started to loose gears. And not "oh this is hard to get into gear", it was a case of cruising along at 70 and 5th gear chewing itself up.... And then 4th started to do the same.
Then there was the s3...... Oh what an utter shower of shite that was! Vacuum hoses going all the time. Head gasket went after 2 weeks of ownership, wiring loom in engine bay decided to melt/split and corrode in a multitude of places - audi wanted £400+ for a new loom. Wire cutters and soldering iron later and I modified a golf gti loom to fit - worked perfect and cost £25!
Which brings me onto another point. The spares cost. Complete rip off for sub par parts!
And breathe

Hence - the MPS is the best car I've ever owned. Love it.
My biggest issue so far is that it's thirsty on screen wash.. Ha.
To add to the S3 problems, as soon as I bought it it needed a new engine mount which cost £650 I believe. Bearing in mind MT1 had already been through two mounts on the same car.
Luckily by the time I sold it it was fault free and the buyer got a great motor, but the bitter taste had already affected me and i hated the S3. Although I do miss it's looks and the Quattro.
