Just thought I'd say hello.

I'm looking at purchasing a MK1 3 MPS, I also fancy a Focus ST but prefer the mazda's understated looks.

I have driven a couple today, one with very low miles and turns out bbr have mapped it for economy - I'm assuming this may be a stage 1?

It was mapped on the road rather than rolling road apparently- does this sound like a stage 1 or maybe a custom map?

Is it possible to tell its mapped by looking? With an actual new chip like the old super chips or are they all done though the diagnostic port?

The car is standard apart from that and in good overall condition.

We let the car idle for 15 mins and no smoke or dodgy noises.
It was then turned off for a few mins before starting again. It was then the management light came on, apparently for the first time ever - the guy seemed genuinely shocked.
It was very low on fuel and the manual mentioned this can occasionally put the light on.
More fuel didn't make any difference. It drove very nicely though.
After we returned and left it for a few minutes it was started up and the light was gone.
It had not been started for a fee weeks and kept outside, could it just be a damp sensor or something and should I worry about it?

The second is a bog standard 51000k car from a Main dealer.

It was 2 years newer and the front bumper paint was a mess and needed a respray.

It didn't drive as nicely either, the power delivery was certainly peakier and it run out of puff a little over 5k. A very different experience for me as I've been driving a vtec engine for the last 10 years!

Sorry for the essay!

If rolling road map then sounds custom.
Mapped through diagnostic port not chipped. None of these cars are mapped for economy and if its a stage 1 bbr tune then will be putting out around 280/290bhp and will be much sharper then a standard one hence you noticed the differance.
Low on fuel will not put engine light on but they can occasionally come on mine did today and went off when I restarted the car so wouldn't over think that but worth a few more drives in case.
The paint is an issue with mazda and does seem to stonechip up and most of the mps range have paintwork done on the front to keep the looks as the water based paint used does stone chip a lot.
Would need a lot more details on the cars maybe a few links to the cars you are looking at and members may know them or can offer advice on checks to do and price

Thanks for the advice. The map was an attempt by the owner to make it slightly better on fuel as he was doing long journeys regularly, seems it wasn't enough so he has purchased a diesel.

Just to confirm it was mapped on the road as he didn't want to put it on a rolling road.

Better mpg a myth like the virgins in Doncaster they don't exist.
Check for vvt rattle and then the usual checks when buying a turbo car.
Then it's all up to you fella as the mps is a great fun car and very reliable for the power it has.
Check this site for The common probs and checks and also would put reg up and see what's known about the car as could stop you buying a lemon.

The reg is FG57 YPJ it's silver.

It's got just under 29k on the clock. All paper work is there bar the receipt for the 3rd service which was done privately. (It covered minimal miles in that time - the mots back that up)

Bugger bugger bugger. Finally made a decision and called him to put a deposit on and there's someone coming down from Liverpool to look at it with cash so he needs to offer it to him first. I'm gutted now!

Wouldn't worry fella if its not meant to be then its not meant.
Their are a few on hear worth dropping an email about and you should join the mpsoc Facebook group as their are cars sometimes available.
Be wise to get an unmapped vehicle if honest unless you get plenty of history as who did the map and I would check with bbr that they did the map as plenty bad maps made more then a few mps go zzb

bbr has a good rep really and a stage one bbr car would be a nice car. live road mapping is the way to go really as its been mapped in a real world enviroment not in a shed with a hamster driven fan wafting air at the car. to me it sounds a nice car. eml needs looking at put then a light can but thrown for simple issues. i would still want it plugging in first to see why it came on.

The plan was to put a deposit on in the agreement I can put my code reader onto it and if all was clear the sale would go through.

It was mapped by Neil at Bbr and the owner even suggested calling him if I had any questions or issues.
