Hi guys,

I'm Dave (no points for guessing where I'm from), and I'm currently driving a slightly modified Lexus IS200 Sport. I love the car, but I'm looking for a bit more power and it's not easy to get that from the IS without significant investment. I love the look of both the 3 and 6 MPS, and am currently undecided as to which would be better. I'm currently working in Northampton, and doing nearly 750 miles a week, so that's something to take into consideration as well - I'd be interested in the opinions of owners as to whether the 6 or the 3 is a better car, as far as I can tell they're essentially the same barring the 4WD of the 6?

Each of us will tell you our model is the best, so it really comes down to what you're looking for!

The Mazda 3 MPS MkII has a distinctive styling. Between the Mazda 3 MPS MkI and Mazda 6 MPS there is the 4WD issue but also the Hatch VS Saloon argument. Hatch is more practicle.

If you werent aware, the rear seats dont fold down (easily) in the 6 MPS.

yea you can open a whole can of worms asking us to decide which is better. there all good cars its really down to personal preferance and weather you can jump from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive. the 6 gets better traction in the more misrable conditions but 3 does very well and on the move is quicker.

TBH I'm completely torn between the 3 and the 6 - I think the 3 looks that bit cooler, plus of course you can get one newer than you can a 6, but at the same time - I'm used to rubbish conditions in Scotland and think the 4WD would definitely help out! The 6 does seem that touch rarer as well on autotrader/pistonheads etc. I'm presuming the tuning options are pretty much the same for both cars as they've got the same engine really...?

Yeah tuning wise they are very similar. Most parts are interchangeable in the engine bay with a different exhaust route out back.

The other thing to consider is road tax. Any 6 or 3 mkI after march 2006 is a whopping £460 a year currently. Maybe £465?

Get a Pre-march 26th 2006 and the tax is lower. £265 per annum.

Might help you decide. Personally I like the saloon look as its more TOCA or BTCC or DTM once lowered. Still both models are sleepers.

The lower tax is pre-23 March 2006. The 3 didn`t exist then.

It`s all down to personal preference so you will need to drive both. The difficulty will be finding examples of each as they are both rare.

Regarding the fuell costs, with the IS it's about £200 a week give or take, and so long as an MPS isn't huge amounts more than that I'd be happy. I can get about 28mpg in the IS, but that's with 700 of the 750 miles being motorway in the Lexus. If I'm just tootling about town it's more like 20-22 or so. What can you get from a tank in an MPS generally? The official figures say something like 37 for combined, but I'm expecting that to be the usual marketing rubbish

The IS is in the pre-06 range as well at £265/year at the moment as well, but it's a good shout to keep an eye out for, thanks for that.

Hello and it all comes down to personal choice really, I haven't drove a mk1 3mps but I have drove a mk2 and was very impressed with the feel of it, if you are in the Glasgow area and want a drive in a 6 then I could try and help you out, and if you like it I might sell my car in the new year (just maybe)

The 3 is easier to get a shot of than a 6 I reckon - after all I can just nipe to the mazda garage down the road from my office in Northampton for a test drive of a 3 MPS - but they don't make the 6 any more. Bit of a shame that, cos the latest shape 6 is pretty gorgeous, too!

Hmmm, not even at the point to buy one yet and already the brain is considering buying the newer shape and getting an engine swap from a 6 MPS in there... Bad brain! Behave!
