I have ticking from my engine, (mps6dave pointed it out to me when we met, as i thought it was normal due to the 2.3 being noisy but mps6dave's was far quieter than mine) though the sound doesn't seem to be coming from the vvt (but near it) also my clutch doesn't vibrate and when i took a look at the vvt it was solid, no play in it etc so I'm a wee bit puzzled, could be the chain, or even the belt, also there is a chance it's the wrong oil too, don't want to take it to Mazda yet as they'll rob me blind. Putting fresh 5w-40 in tomorrow.
Even if the engine & work were to cost me as little as £2300, which tbh would never be this low, I would still be spending more money than the car was worth to me. With the low initial purchase price of the car, and taking into consideration the fair amount I received from selling the broken car my ONLY option was to sell the damned thing and cut my losses. Not to mentioned the fact that I recouped a large chunk of cash from returning the car back to standard-ish

Sorry I can't advise ref your ticking noise. The only noise I had was like a power steering belt whine when turning the wheel at 0mph, but this went away after a few days and nothing untoward for a week or so after that.........except BOOM!!!
