Evening all and a happy new year. Not long joined the forum as I'm looking for a 3mps in the not too distant future and so far unsure on whether it will be a mk1 or mk 2

Depends on your budget and plans, plus its worth knowing the mk1 has 2 variants, either the standard (nom aero) or with sports aero kit. The sports aero kit, gives lower stiffer springs, sports wing mirrors and a nice rear spoiler.
Mk1 is double the tax, has a better interior and seats, has more aftermarket parts/mods and is easier to tune, will be cheaper to buy and is more of a sleeper car.
Mk2 has stiffer chassis with slightly softer suspension so has better handling but a softer ride to, it has half the tax of the mk1, the mk2 comes with more kit as standard such as sat nav and heated seats, it looks more aggressive to, but I still prefer the mk1.

No test drive of either yet but will drive both. The only thing so far that scares me off the mk 1 is the vvt and tensioner issues I have just read about

I wouldn't worry about that it's only on some cars. Majority of cars wont have it. These cars are generally v. Reliable for a hot hatch.

Some ppl, like me, thought they had a VVT/tensioner issues but didn't. Not to be confused with normal DISI noise.

Yeah it's a noisy engine at idle... The fuel pump also makes ticking noises. It's a little bit worrying but since I've stopped reading the bad stuff I feel much better

Cool, cheers for the replies. Think a mk1 is on the cards unless I go,crazy and splash out on the mk2 but looking unlikely. Other, contenders were/are the focus st and Astra vxr but would prefer something jap to be fair

The mk1 is much faster than an st, and better built and more reliable than the vxr. It's also a much rarer car and nicer to be in.

MPS is quicker than an ST a few guys on here have had ST's and may be able to offer an opinion on owning one. Not sure if any of us have expericenced a VXR to own.........

I had a Focus ST2 as a company car for a while when I was working for a Mazda dealership and tried the Mki 3MPS. I thought the ST a much nicer car to drive personally but the MPS was very much quicker - noticable at any speed in any gear. The 5-pot ST engine just has character that the MZR can never even aspire to and, in my opinion at least, the ST felt like it handled better and got the power down much more politely I actually replaced the ST with a 6 MPS as a company car and fell in love with that even more because it can handle the power better and I have a beard. When I got out of the company car game ... I bought a 6 MPS It just depends what suits you at the end of the day. There's no doubting that there's a load of 3 owners on this forum and they all love their car and they can't all be wrong - even if they do all wear Burberry hats As DLM says - you gotta go and try them - well, don't bother with the VXR cause it's made by GM and they've never made a good car yet. ... only you can tell what you like and all you'll get on a forum is opinions and the only one that counts is your own

I owned a vxr nurburgring edition, the mps pulls its pants down in all departments.
