Normal wear and tear? I don't think so. I thought that the key difference between a Mazda's expensive warranty and the independents was that you didn't get this nonesense. Did the dealer authorise the strip out? If so, it is their responsibility. That's quite an admission that the gearbox oil is not suitable for purpose. Wouldn't surprise me as my high rev changes are much better since I put in fully synth Millers. All you should get between 1st and 2nd is a degree of bauking, especially when cold, but not grinding, just like most cars.
I'm at 51K and up and down changes in to second have always been difficult on cold mornings.
The dealer is way out of whack on the warranty
If you have the official Zoom Zoom warranty the only thing not covered on the gear box end is the clutch
So long as the vehicle has been maintained as per the hand book, there should be no problem for them to repair under warranty
Why do these warranty guys do this. I had the same issue with the AC system last year. They paid in the end but I had to fight them.
Good luck mate and keep us up to date
