Hi everyone. Not an owner yet but hope to be soon.

Joined to board to find out what to look out for when buying an oldish Mazda6 MPS; I'm thinking 2005 or early 2006 to avoid the hike in road tax.

Currently drive a '97 MX-6 and as retirement looms I can afford something more recent.

I have been toying with Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Astra & Vectra VXR and the Mazda 3 & 6 MPS.

I don't need a big car so the 3 would do but they will all be newer than the March 06 cut off point. The Focus is in with a chance but at my age I don't particularly need a 'boy racer' image so the restrained styling of the 6 appeals.

What should I look out for and what sort of price for a '55 or 06 plate?

Thanks guys (& gals if there are any)
Dave

Welcome to MPSOC Dave. :)

I agree with you on styling, the 6 MPS is the most subtle looking of the cars you've listed.

You should just really look out for the general bits and pieces really, make sure its been serviced by a dealer all its life, that way it's been kept up together and also, any recalls would have been completed.

Other than that, look in the 6 MPS general section and some 6 MPS owners have listed some common faults to look out for.

MX-6, what a lovely machine  i think ive only ever seen one at work. Was it the V6?

Thanks for the welcome.

Mazdatech.

It is the 2.5l V6, how the heck they cram all that lot into that tiny space is beyond me LOL.

In the past I have owned Yank tanks, they are a joy to work on when you can sit in the engine bay to do work! Thank goodness I have not had to work on either MX-6, at least in the engine bay.

Also in the garage is a 92 MX-6 Red with cloth interior, which I prefer to the leather in the '97 one.

Dave

Welcome to the club.
Road tax on pre March 06 6MPS cars - They are currently in Band K £245 from April. HOWEVER the official line is that cars over 225 CO2's registered after 2000 will gradually migrate to Band L or M overtime. This was a concession to alleviate the huge rise originally proposed. So you may be overplaying the "low tax" requirement because it could all be a waste of time.
My fervent hope is that the Government will leave well alone and leave pre March 06 6MPS's in Band K. But it is only a hope.

Now that global warning has been shown to be a scam the Gov should do away with these tax bands <grrrr>.

A fairer way would be to do away with road tax as a separate tax and increase the tax on fuel so those who do the most mileage pay the most, but it won't happen.

Only reason for two is that when I put the '92 up for sale I would have got more scrapping it!

All MX-6 owners think they are under valued cars and moan about the prices they fetch yet none of them will make a sensible offer.

Both will have to go if/when I get a MPS as I aint leaving that outside.
