New member! Evening chaps, Picked my mk1 6 mps up on Sunday and I'm in love already! It's running stage 2, hpfp, intercooler, full system, short ram intake. Told it's running around 320 mark but no printout to prove. it feels about right and drinks a lot of fuel! First on my list is underseal and a full inspection, I've been quoted £400 and £485 so far. does that sound about right? second is the chain. what sort of mileage do you pros normally do them at? I've got no odd rattles or noises but the cars at 74k now and it's never been done to my knowledge. Cheers, Liam (wings)

Underseal wise, where are you based? Ive got a guy who does it for something like £230, and will do a full seal, seats and carpet out etc for around £400

I'm based near Cambridge and work in Milton Keynes. that's good news about the chain, I did think that was the case but didn't know if anyone would pipe up with a horror story! it has FSH so I'd say I'm safe for now I'm not overly bothered about the cost of the ultraseal but don't want to be giving people money for nothing, both reckon they will do it in a day with a couple of people going at it.

Liam. Fill your profile so we know where you're based roughly so we can assist if need be if every needed. Do you know who mapped the car? When you say full system, this from turbo back or cat back?

Profile updated. I'm at work so got a bit of juggling going on! 304 stainless 3" decat downpipe from turbo to 200cell sports cat 304 stainless 2.5" from cat back made by rebal power pipes (whoever that is) not sure who done the map, I need to dig in the paperwork! as soon as I see the car I got instant car goggles and brought it. First stop is a full Inspection!

Updated, I think I just replied to this but not 100% nightshift taking it's toll! From turbo to sports cat and out so... Chain or not to Chain? My feeling is to get A full inspection of everything and see what that pulls up, Underseal and then think about chain before the big 100k mark

Im not disputing that is isnt a weak point, but the chains "should not" perish.... quality of care does have a lot to do with it though, as with any engine... if the cars been ragged and not maintained properly then yep, itll need sorting... my old M3 E46 threw its chain at 6 weeks from new, it happens, theres always a bad batch. What i meant with my last post is theres no point loosing sleep over the chain, all the warning signs will most likely come far before a catastrophic failure and IF that time comes, then sort it... The pin might be weak, and if it was to doff its cap and walk out of the door without warning, that would be seriously unfortunate.

Love a good debate! I know it's unlikely to happen. It's not something I'd usually worry about but a workmate just had to splash out on a rebuild due to his 3 series chain going so it's planted the seed in my head

The pin might be weak, and if it was to doff its cap and walk out of the door without warning, that would be seriously unfortunate. I don't want to come across like a knob, but sadly I disagree and think you need to research a bit more regards the failings of the MPS's vvt/chain. Some have let go within 20k of the cars life. Some go without any warning what so ever, some have been changed when no signs of failings where present such as rattle, yet when the engine was opened up the vvt and chain needed doing, take our Justins car for a perfect example, no signs at all yet when opened up it was clear it was needed, Same with Dougies car, no signs, no noise or rattle, normally driving down the road and the chain slipped and give up the ghost blowing his block. Best example of this is also David Hasties 6, best MPS uk mechanic (His rep is outstanding) Yet his vvt pin let go with no warning at all and he bent a rod due to it , if anyone would notice any signs it'd of been him . Also, ragging the car or not does not put extra strain on the chain, it's a fixed tension, even with stupid power, no additional force/stress is put onto the chain. Ideally, you should treat the vvt/chain as a cam belt and change aprox every 50-60k. But open the rocker cover and check at each service, cause its a poor design, even Mazda admit it and did a service bulletin recall for it.

Think you can get the full kit from Edge Autosport in the US (way cheaper than UK dealers) for about £300 delivered. Then £200-250 for fitting at a garage (unless you pick out Mazda, in which case don't forget the lube...)

Hastie fits them for £150 now. He's Ambleside based, young motors. Well worth the trip from north wales, nice day out while your car gets worked on by someone who is very very good with the mps. Win win.

Bargain, I Hadn't even looked at cost yet.
off subject, I took the new toy out for a bit of a blast last night which was awesome but quickly realized I need a bit more stopping power! got yellow stuff pads on but standard discs.
without starting a war, what are peoples preferences? I'm liking the look of black diamonds but it's not about looks, I'd rather stop quicker

Yellow stuff take a some time to warm up, I've used them on track with no problem, other will report they are crap. There are better pads for road use though,
