Alright mate. Welcome along. Have a quick search and you'll get some good tips. Main issues to watch out for are VVT (listen for chain slap on cold start) and smokey turbo (let it idle for 10 mins and check for blue smoke).
Where are you based? Might be able to find a friendly member close by that can give you a run in a 3 and/or 6. 6's are a bit cheaper but probably a bit easier to find a good example of a 3.

You'll be able to find one, just not normally a fast process lol and normally involves a fair trek to get it.
Read thru the threads in the welcome section loads of helpful tops on buying. Oh and please don't be pulled in by these people asking daft money as the car has low miles, I saw an add asking I think it was 10k for a facelift mk1 because it only had 9k on the clock lol
Generally speaking 6s are a fair chunk cheaper than a comparable 3, can be in the lower tax bracket of 265. All mk1 3s are in the high tax bracket 490, available as aero and standard, aero adds spoiler, different wing mirrors and uprated suspension. Mk2s from what I've seen are the lower tax of 265 and are absolutely stuffed with toys, alto I did read that at one point there was a batch without sat nav.
For facelifts I'm not sure if they can fall into either tax bracket or are always the higher one.
The three different versions of the 3 all have a slightly different interior trim, whereas the 6 only had one option... Full leather

The road tax change over date was 23/03/06. After that date any 6 will be in the higher band. All Mk1 3`s are in the higher band.

what differances are there between the mk1 2 & 3 3mps? i'm struggling to identify them. Also what years, to and from, are the 3 and 6 in the lower tax bracket?

You can get some 6s alto very few registered before the tax went up, see the date above, as long add they were regulated before that you'll get lower tax bracket.
All mk1 3s including facelifts are high tax bracket
All Mk2 3s are lower tax bracket, Mk 2s have the bonnet scoop

Wouldn't get to hung up on the road tax , it will cost far more if the cars not been looked after. I would say the couple of hundred quid will soon be put in the tank anyway. As said before be prepared to travel do your homework check the forum for what to look out for. Also if you do locate one miles away you can normally find somebody on here to check it out for you and save a wasted trip. Good luck.
