Just wanted to say hi I'm Rod and I'm new to the forum.

I picked up a 6 MPS a few weeks ago. The shortlist for my next car was:

    - An MPS (duh)

    - Lexus IS 250

    - Maserati 3200GT

    - Mitsubishi Evolution 10 FQ300

    - Hyundai Coupe v6

I ended up settling on the MPS mainly because of the lower maintenance, lower asking prices and it has a sunroof which the mrs was pretty set on!

My last car which I've just started breaking is a fully built & forged NA Honda Prelude 4th gen with about 265Bhp. You can see my rebuild thread here.

Going from that to an AWD turbo car is taking some getting used to. I love the extra grip at launch, but I'm not loving the slower throttle response or turbo lag! But in time I hope to sort that out with a bit of cheeky tuning.

My MPS has had the timing chain and bits around it replaced recently. It's only got 55K miles, but there's still a funny noise at cold start-up that sounds a bit like the squeal of a dry bearing. Seems to be coming from the nearside of the engine (down by the battery). I'll get a video of it up soon.

Over the next few weeks I'll get all the basic service stuff done, plus I'll need a complete set of discs and pads, new tyres and a couple of other bits I can't think of right now. Once that's all done I can start to save up for some juicy mods :)

:welcome: mate.
There's not much lag on a stock MPS, it's gear selection that matters on these.

Don't be setting off too hard too often without upgrading the diff mounts.

What mods you looking at?
Hope you replace all tyres the same, and 225/40's are cheaper

Sounds like you'll fit in well here :)
Have you receipts to prove the VVT was done or was it you who had it done?

Welcome i found out on the weekend that you can alter the throttle sensitivity , so 33% movement equals full throttle .Kind of like the vxr button in vauxhalls but always on. I am sure youd like that .

stick some pics up

edit to say thats with a cobb accessport

Welcome in mate - mines has had the VVT done a while back but i do still get a little whine from one of the pulleys until it gets warm... could be that?

Wasnt the first one that the mechanic had heard doing it either... stops within a couple of mins...

It's coming from the battery side though

Nice of you all to say hi :)

I'm in Warlingham, Surrey.

Here she is...

ImageImageImage

^Why is the gallery so BIG??!

I'll be looking at some diff mounts very soon, and probably the extra engine mount thingy? I like to launch hard, if only occasionally! As for performance mods I'm going to think very carefully about it. I don't want to spoil the car's refined qualities if you know what I mean. If I want evo performance I'll just have to sell the MPS and buy one instead. Keeping it quiet will be high on the list, but I wouldn't mind a bit more of a growl at WOT.

The guy I bought it off has just recently given me a link to his receipt for all the VVT stuff on totalmps. It's got his name and address on it. He tells me he went to his normal mechanic to do the job, but he said best to talk to his mate at the Mazda dealership. So he did it as a cash job after hours and has handwritten a receipt to show what was fitted plus labour. This guy suggested they fit a load more parts than what was in the kit as well, just to be sure, and they're all noted down on the receipt at a cost of another hundred or so. Guides and seals and stuff like that I think.

Here's a video of the startup gremlin. It only does it from cold, but if I stop and re-start the engine while it's still cold it will still do it.

What I mean about the throttle response is a bit hard to describe. It might be down to the heavy flywheel, just because it's a turbo, or AWD, or a heavier car to what I'm used to. Say I'm stopped at a roundabout and the car in front has just pulled away (quickly) and I'm next to go. I check to my right and there's a good safe gap if I move off quickly. So I bring the revs up to pull off quick but get the clutch engagement ever so slightly wrong and the revs drop to 1.8K : eek2 :. As I start to move off there's no power so I floor it. Wait for it... Wait for it... Oh no too late I'll hit the car in front's bumper if the boost comes in now. Lift off and give up. Find another time for go faster smiles. Now wave sorry to the guy behind I just pulled out on.

And then there's changing gears. I've found if I lift off the throttle completely between shifts, it takes 1/2 a second for the boost to come in again on the next gear. So I've found myself only part lifting between shifts, trying to keep the revs at 2K ish, so the power comes in straight away.

AND one other thing. Why did they make the gear ratios such that 2nd maxes out just below 60? That must add at LEAST 0.3 of a second to the 0-60 time!

Can you let us know which parts were replaced with the VVT. Sounds like the chain or tensioner noise to me. If it was just a dry chain on a cold start, you wouldn`t get the noise on a second cold start immediately afterwards.

I don`t believe you have classic turbo lag. Something else is wrong there. If you are coming from a traditional cable throttle to drive-by-wire then you might sense some lag but nothing as dramatic as you say
In my experience lots of modern cars can`t reach 60 in second without going past peak power.
