Hi all,

Names lee,I'm 27 and live near Weybridge in surrey I am looking to buy a mps in the new year.ive wanted one for years but been sidetracked by an fiesta st I supercharged and was 335bhp plus an evo 9 and a nissan Silvia s15 which is stupid clean which I'm selling for an mps.amoungts other cars I've had while the toys sat in the drive I just want a fast comfy car now that me and my mrs can jump into and drive and not get wound up by rattles an a crap ride (s15 is a toy but is too harsh it's like a track car all suspension arms are up rated plus coilovers 35 profile tyres not nice on these roads lol)

I love how it looks and the interior.just after some advise.

I'm looking for 320/340bhp what mods do I need?

Also I've heard horror stories about piston rings and all sorts but I've always led to believe this were reliable bar the odd turbo.

I'm desperate for one of these I love my current car but it's old noisy inside and I want something to replace it but not to be boring but a bit more grown up and seat 5.

Any advise I'm grateful for.

Thanks

Lee

Welcome to the forum. Check out timing chain, tensioner and vvt actuator on your searches. Also turbo smoke on idle. If it is a mk1 they may be sorted by previous power.

Good luck.

Hi lee, as i said on fb, great car!!

As above if your buying a mk1 check if the chain has been done before. Turbos are bad for smoking the standard ko4 is pants and are common for going. Part from that they are pretty reliable and great sleepers. Also for 320/340bhp ull need hpfp internals

I sold the 9 a year ago with great regret..I lost my job at the bbc as they shut it down so I was made redundant and couldn't afford to keep it..

I've the s15 still but really fancy one of these.

I'm thinking short ram intake, down pipe with sport cat and decat and intercooler and map happy I I make 320 ish for a little while.

Looking at 2008 if I can, heard they have better turbo seals? If it's got a full history from mazda the chain should be done..will there be a certain stamp for this?

Thanks for the replies!

The smoke on idle turbo problem was not solved by Mazda until they modified the crankcase ventilation system during MKII production. A lot of members have solved the problem cheaply but you will need to read up on this.

The timing chain etc problem was not a recall. Some people got theirs replaced under warranty but outside that Mazda didn`t want to know. The DSR will only show service history so you will need invoices etc to prove otherwise unless you buy from Mazda in which case they can check the car`s records.

Ahhh I see, will have to try and find out about it on here..will search and see what I can find.

Tbh if the car has no invoices that's not a good sign as I keep every bill for my car even to the smallest things so will have a good look when I go to view one.

Does anyone live local to me with one I'm in surrey near jc11 of the m25 or Weybridge..never been close to a mps or anything and would love to see one up close and maybe take me for a spin if I can be cheeky enough lol!

Totally agree about invoices. They can tell you a lot about a car AND its owner/s. Remember that from a certain date, there will be no service record book just the digital version which can be printed out. Invoices still the best though.

Hiya mate and welcome to the forum,

As any car you buy second hand there can be problems, my advice is keep your eyes peeled for a 3 for sale on here :). There always popping up, and owned by an enthusiast you know it's been maintained and have a look at their build threads etc etc.

If not, go for the newest one possible, perhaps you could stretch the budget to a Mk2 mps ;)

I've only just bought my 6mps a month ago and regret buying the first one I've seen, I've had to do a full service, 4 new tyres and it needs the VVT sorted, maby even a bent conrod. :(

For tuning, as above Short ram intake with turbo inlet pipe, updated high pressure fuel pump internals, up rated top mount intercooler, second decat and a custom remap from Total Mps in Newcastle are probz your best bet. However if you would like the option to 'tune as you mod'. Go for Cobb AP or versatune :)

Road tax is high if you don't already know and servicing is every 9k for the mk1 mps I believe.

Good look

Depending on how far your budget can stretch i know of a cheap white low mileage mk2 with a mazda warranty.

Thanks all for the replies!

I really like the mk1 mps and my budget can be 12k but I'm looking to spend 7 ish maybe a little more for the right car.

I would like one with 30-40k as I wana keep it at least a few years as I'm moving out and I know about the tax my evo was £475 a year too..

Once I learn how to upload pics I'll stick some up of all my cars I've been very lucky to own the cars I have and am a huge petrol head.one day I'm hoping to get another evo.

I'm a bit worried about service history as it's all digital..would I have to go to mazda and get a print out? Servicing I will be doing every 3/4k anyway regular oil changes do the the world of good!!

Also what's people views on sport catted down pipes?

If anyone knows of one coming up for sale please let me know as I'm looking to buy soon..my s15 will sell easy as its one of the cleanest in the uk (with out sounding a cocky prick) so should go easy.

Are there any tell tail signs to look for on these? I've had 4 turbo cars and one supercharged and am clued up but always worth asking as I'm no super mechanic so any advise would help :)

Thanks all!

Most go carless DP but some have gone sportscat, either way, you'll need a map right away or you could blow the engine with a boost spike.
