As you may know i'm in the market for an MPS. Seen what appears to be a nice one, Black 58 plate only 24k miles at a dealer not too far from me.
Anyway, I asked about service history and the guy told me that the car is a finance reposession bought by his brother in law which he had serviced at 22k miles and this is the only service on record (so no 3k service). He also stated that you 'don't get a service book as such', everything is recorded electronically by Mazda...is this correct? Seems a bit strange not getting a service book as what if you want the car serviced elsewhere? Without any previous service history I am a bit dubious about the mileage as there would surely be nothing to prove it without any recorded service history. The car was first registerd in Feb 2009 so I'm not sure if it will have had it's first MOT or not yet.
Finally, with the car not having full service history, in particular the first service which I believe to be crucial, could this give me any problems at a later date?

Thanks in advance
Andy

Its correct mate, the service history is recorded electronically on the Mazda DSR. The mazda dealer should be able to offer you a print out of this. if only the 22k service is recorded on the DSR and no other supporting docs available for previous services then i wouldn't bother with it.

Cheers mate.

Yeah i am a bit dubious about it having no service history. Like i say the guy recons that it is a finance reposession and he thinks the previous owner either didn't service it, because money was tight (hence the reposession) or had it done at an independant garage. I've not been to look at it yet, wondering whether it's worth my while with the service history issue.

The "brother in law?" probably didn't pay that much for it as a repo job - ditto the dealer. I would want that reflected in the price. Having got that sorted, I would do the usual checks plus the vvt and turbo seals check.(Read up on the threads). But make sure you get a decent warranty. Seems hard to believe someone would buy an MPS and not get it serviced, especially in warranty.

I would hope that the car has been serviced under warranty and its just that there is no paper documentation to support it because its all on the DSR? Might be possible to have the dealer (not a Mazda one I assume) contact Mazda for a copy of the DSR? Otherwise I'd steer well clear.

I'd be calling Mazda with the Reg number as they would be able to tell you if it has or hasn't been serviced with a Mazda dealership.

Cheers for the replies everyone.

Basically the dealer has said they've done a search on the DSR and the only service record is the one his brother in law had done at 22k. The car is up for £8,275 and it's a 2009 58 plate with 24k on the clock so looking at that I think it's well priced based on others currently available...although that could be because there's something up with it!

Not sure how much of a warranty it comes with (if any), haven't got that far yet.

So is the general consensus that I should steer clear because of the lack of service history?

Cheers

Hmm doesn't sound right, to not bother getting a brand new car serviced by dealer is just wrong. Can you call the Mazda dealership yourself to confirm?

I wouldn't say that's a good price for a car with almost no history. I paid 7500 for my 08 (facelift) with 28k on the clock and a full service history, 6 months ago and theyre getting cheaper from what I can see on Autotrader / Pistonheads. £9k would have got you Ross' mint example on here if it hadn't sold. From what I've read the 3k service is quite important. I wouldn't take the risk.

Yeah that's what i thought. The reg that's on it at the moment is a private one which is the current owners, don't know what the previous registration was so can't check with Mazda at the moment. I'll ask him for the old reg and check when i speak with him next.

That's a very good price you paid then. All others within roughly 100 miles radius from me (Trade) are all priced at around £9k for 58/09 Plates with lowish 20k mileage.

There's a nice silver 57 plate with 27k on the clock I've seen up for £8300 but the dealer won't budge on the price and will only give me £5k part-ex for mine when i've been offered closer to £6k elsewhere.

Did you buy yours Private mate?

There are too many to get twisted over this ones service history. Ur not comfortable with it entirely otherwise it would be on ur drive now. Any doubts then walk away like Gavin said. Get a 100% legit one with no wierd stories

Cheers everyone. I'm in no immediate rush at the moment, i still need to strip my Astra of its Mods anyway so i think I'll dodge this one and wait for another to come up. There aren't many out there and the cheaper ones appear to be mostly down south for some reason. I'm pretty confident that a few of the ones I've seen up at around £9k will come down because they're definitely over priced...just a matter of waiting!
