Can you let us know which parts were replaced with the VVT. Sounds like the chain or tensioner noise to me. If it was just a dry chain on a cold start, you wouldn`t get the noise on a second cold start immediately afterwards.

Here's the list from the Mazda mechanic.

Replaced:
    Main chain
    Oil pump chain
    Chain runners x4
    Chain tensioner
    Sealer
    Serpentine belt
    VVT unit
    Crank bolt
    Cam bolt (VVT)

Total parts £153.32 (these are in addition to the VVT kit from totalmps)

As I started her up last night I had a listen again. It doesn't sound like the clack/slap of a chain. It's definitely more of a squeal like a worn or dry bearing. Just had a look at a diagram of the engine. Could it be the starter motor pinion gear winding down?

I don`t believe you have classic turbo lag. Something else is wrong there. If you are coming from a traditional cable throttle to drive-by-wire then you might sense some lag but nothing as dramatic as you say

There is some oil deposit at the top of the engine on what looks like the turbo housing, just below the plastic cover to the right of the exhaust manifold. There's also a slight smell of oil in the cabin when using boost. Perhaps there's a leak somewhere. I'll have a look when I do the plugs.

And I do notice a very slight lag with the drive-by-wire (maybe 0.2 second). Are there any tuning options that improve this?
