£20 around town less than a 100 miles about £60 will give you 300 miles, one tank.

I would say a stock 6MPS will only give you about 22mpg in town in summer. So 3.5 gallons for £20 equals 77 miles. The 6MPS is not an eco car.

Wherer you getting cheap vpower from ? :p I drive mine fairly "sensibly" get 270 miles from a tank regularly, full tank is ~£70 thats on vpower nitro+ Lasts me 8-10 days Just remember to be sensible until the engine has warmed up ;) As for what to look out for mate... Personally I get the reg and last MOT number, that way you can check online if theres any repeated standout issues with the car. Oh and check yer Tax :p Good luck finding the car in the colour you want AND the low tax bracket, I gave up n went with the expensive bracket :( Open the bonnet start it up and listen for VVT chain noise, from front left of the engine. Let it idle for 15mins or so while you do all yer other checks. Check alloys for corossion, I did think mine were bad then went to view another recently can get bad haha Check The A/C works, I didn't and it sounds like an expensive repair, may as while check the other electrics while yer there. Check rear arches for rust, common problem on earlier ones apparantly I've saw a few people comment on cracked bumpers recently, rear bumper directly in front of boot. Make sure all 4 tyres are the same size/brand/tread pattern, rear diff can be pretty picky and mismatched tyres can cause damage. Then your other usual checks when buying used car Then hoof the car and check for smoke from exhaust, white is ok, bluey/grey will indicate upcoming turbo problems, oh and it absolutely stinks too :p Think I've gotten everything there, anything else just ask. Where you located and what colour you after? Lemme know and I'll keep an eye out

I use tesco's finest momentum and have a 20 mile motorway drive to work so as long as i don't go daft can usually make £60 last 300 miles.

I've had my 6 for 1 week today. Around town I am getting 23.1 litres per hundred miles, so a touch under 20mpg. Initially I though "why isn't the calculator in mpg, why is it l/100 miles...grrrr", but actually, you can quickly work out 23.1 liters per hundred will be about £30, so £30 per hundred miles. more useful in the real world than mpg. Also means you can tell how far you can go when at the petrol pump. If you've got a 200 mile journey, stick in 46 litres. Better than knowing "I get 20mpg, and I therefore need 10 gallons for 200 miles, so 10/4.5 is...err...fuck it I'll just fill it up".
The rust starting on mine is around the top of the struts in the engine bay, brake calipers, the bottom of one arch where it meets the side skirt, and on others I looked at it affected head bolts, exhausts, various parts of the undertrays and bonnets. Mine was manufactured 9th Jan 2006.
I couldn't find anything for less than 4.5k which was worth looking at, but the ones listed at 4.5 - 5k seem to be blagable down to 4-4.25k. I think 5k would buy a really tidy one (mine is not perfect due to the aforementioned rust patches and has covered 73k, but mechanically sound with FSH, new matching tyres and wheels and 6 months tax/mot). 5k would get you one listed at 5500 with 40-50k on it and all shiny and stuff.
As said, VVT is important, costs about £300 for parts and 300 labour at independant garage, £1200 from Mazda. That and turbo seals (look for smoke when warmed up from the turbo after 10 minute idle or when revved up to 4k once warm). a little smoke when booting it is probably OK as the seals are notoriously crap, but big clouds = bad. Black smoke = bad. White from cold could be condensation.
p.s...welcome along!
