Hi! I signed up a while back as I was just doing a little bit of research- I decided that I wanted to replace my cupra r with a mazda 6 MPS. I've needed to speed up the process as someone decided to rear end my Leon and write it off I'm after a low tax 6 with less than 50k on it. Any tips on what to look for on these cars?

welcome to the forum. 1. listen for any chain rattle on the left hand side of the engine, a sign the VVT most likely needs replacing, chain etc. dont mistake this for the ticking on the right hand side, this will be the fuel pump. 2. let the car idle for 10/15mins and see if any white/blueish smoke appears and stinks. a sign the turbo seals are shot and new tubby time apart from the above they are a great car. have a search on the forum, will find out loads of info

Think you'd do well to fine a 6 in the low tax bracket in all honesty

The low tax ones were registered before 23/3/06 and are likely to have the OEM snatchy clutches.

It's not the clutch that's snatchy is it, thought it's the pedal position on them , which can be adjusted in 2 minutes. As for a low tax with less than 50k on, that could take all year to find. Bite the bullet an ignore the tax bracket.

I agree the pedal position from the factory was pants and I adjusted it to a more comfortable take up point, but it was still snatchy. The only cure was a warranty fix which involved the whole clutch including the pedal assembly. The result was night and day.

I do like the idea of a 3MPS but I'm trying to justify the tax So you want an older car which will probably need to have money spent on it to justify saving a couple of hundred pounds a year? If you can get a really good example within your requirements go for it but I would not let the tax put me off buying a better example

Have you checked out insurance costs? Compared with other similar cars, the MPS is often cheaper to jnsure so it might cancel out the insurance difference. Also, if you are comparing the 6 against the 3, the 3 is slightly more economical. Definitely don`t sacrifice a really good example just because of the high road tax.

I admit I wavered a bit when I saw how much the tax was going to be (missed the cheap tax by 2 days!). Then I got the insurance quote which was unexpectedly low (in my head I'd budgeted 500 quid for the insurance) and decided that all together the price per year was do-able.
