Hi All, I'm looking to buy a 3 MPS around 2008/9 model. I've looked at Focus ST's, Renault-sport Megane's etc but nothing grasps me as much as the MPS does. I think it's the fact that only true petrol heads realise the potential/performance of these cars. I love the whole wolf in sheeps clothing affect. I'm looking to buy a mk1 model with around 30k on the clock. Looking to spend around 9k Just a few questions, Is there anything I need to look out for mechanically wise? How reliable are these cars? Just any general things I should know before making my purchase?? Many Thanks Ryan

welcome to the forum
when looking at a car, let it idle for 10mins, if you see white smoke, tint of blue and stinks, turbo seals are most likely shot. listen out for any ticking noise from the left handside of the engine, could be sign that the VVT needs changing. the engines are quite ticky from the fuel pump but this is on the right hand side (I think).
apart from the above, they are rather sound

Gooooood choice. I looked at the same cars you mentioned but the mps is in a separate class.

Been having a look around the forum. Some of your MPS's are beautiful. Im seeing alot of people with VVT and chain problems? Are these a common fault with these engines? What sort of mileage are these things likely to fail? I assume its also down to how the engine has been driven aswell? Or is it just pot luck if they fail or not?

It is believed that MPS engines PRODUCED after April 2007 have the revised VVT actuator. As you are after a 2008/2009 model, you should be OK. Why some have failed, pre-April 2007, is still a mystery given that they run for tens of thousands of miles with no issues. The big issue after April 2007 production is turbo smoke on idle which has run on into the MKII. If you check this out before buying and follow the excellent advice on this forum, chances are you will not have a problem. Yes you could get stung, so be careful and have some money set aside just in case. Same applies to any car bought used though.
