Afternoon all.

I was following a Mazda6 MPS home from work the other day and thought it looked great. He then put his foot down and was gone - I couldn't keep up! (my Saab is 220hp).

I did some googling when I got home and decided I want one! Not because it's fast, but because it's different. I'm an avid Rover fan and this car reminds me of the 620ti - underestimated and unpopular. I like different, that's why I drive a barge of a Saab 95 (I'm 26 and all my mates still live in the world of hatchbacks!)

So I would like more info on them.

Are they easy to remap? I found that the US version is 280hp and the UK is detuned to 256hp. So how hard is it to get a remap? If it's anything like the Saabs it's easy. Tuning companies do remaps for £500, but some enthusiasts have the software on laptops etc. Also what turbo do they use?

I really want one and it's only £44 a year more to insure than my 2002 Saab. The stinger is the tax, but you gotta' give a little to get a little - right..?

Andy

welcome to the forum. easy enough to tune now. a few years ago it was hard but theres getting more and more gear for them now. they use a ko4 turbo but with a unique exhuast flange.

as for remap, theres a few about starting at the top is

Hq
totalmps
rs tuning (new boy)
bbr

you can aslo do it your self using a laptop on a program called versa tuner. loads of cars on here are running it

total mps remap is £430 i dont know about the rest.

is your old rover what they called the tom cat

As Gavin said on the 1st reply. +1

There are 3 models of Mps. In price order

6 Mps
3 Mps mki
3 Mps mkii

The 6 is the only one that's 4wd which makes it great for initial setting off and good in the snow/wet/loose road (gravel/mud etc) but when rolling, both 3's are quicker, this is because of the 6's extra weight and power is lost going to all 4 wheels rather than 2.

If your going to mod it the some basic bolt ons should be first.

Not gospel but it generally goes

Tip &/or Sri
2nd decat
Recirc valve
Re-map
Tmic or fmic
Downpipe

After the last two, a re-map tweak is required as well as uprating to new fuel pump internals.

Also, regards tax, though rarer, the mki 3 and 6 are available at £270 a year and £470 a year, it depends when it left the factory, can't remember the cut off date for the lower tax models. The 3 mkii is the lower tax band on all years of production.

Hope this helps a bit?

You are right about the insurance being reasonable on a 6 and the r/t being unreasonable unless you can get a pre 23/3/06 registered version. Don't forget they need above 98 octane fuel, preferably Momentum from Tesco.
Be careful buying privately or make sure you get a rock solid warranty from a dealer. There are 3 MPS issues which affect them:
The VVT actuator/timing chain etc
The turbo seals
The early clutch
I would strongly recommend reading up on this forum before buying as they are expensive to put right.
Best of luck.

Welcome ! I recently bought one as I wanted something different too and have no regrets. Having just gone down the Versatuner route for mapping the engine I can tell you that it works out at about £350. Also if you go for an older car (like I did) the tax is about £200 a year cheaper!

Everyone here is very friendly and helpful, good luck with your search...

Thanks for all the replies.

I've found a nice one, bit pricey but could be worth it. Going to have a look at the weekend. Funnily enough it's red. I HATE red, but the 6MPS just looks right in red.

Yeah it's a Tomcat. It's my pride and joy, I've had it 4 years and plan to keep it. It won't lose any value, so as long as I keep it fairly standard and tidy it will eventually go up in value.

:welcome: like gav said very easy to tune however after doing research on here and speaking to dave i would recomend versatune for sure as you do all your own maps and it also logs everything for you.

its $549 that includes the sofware download and a cable. very easy to use and instructions are very clear.
