Hi All,

I have been wanting a MPS for around a 3 weeks now. Her in doors, finally gave me the go ahead to get a sports car again. Happy days.

I am looking at a Mk1 Mazda 3 MPS.

I have read the buyers guide (Great post), already seen one, but it had lots of rust over the rear of the chassis and in the engine bay! Also it had a few electrical issue, so walked.

However I wanted to get some thoughts on the real monthly cost of running the car. Working on the fact this will be my every day car, doing a 5 day week run of around 45-50miles on mainly country roads. At the weekend I could possibly be doing another 200 miles may 2 out of 4 weeks. (Family Duties)

So, how many miles do is it estimated you get from a tank, doing that sort of travel? I am guessing £60 fills it up, with standard petrol.

Tyres? How much should I budget per month?
Oils/Liquids? Again, how much should I put aside each month.
Chain, how hard is it to really do yourself?

As you can see I am trying to get a feel of the spend every month ;)

The one I am looking at is a 2008. 56k, and I am advised it has full Mazda Service. (Will be checking this week with a dealer)

Any help/advise is really appreciated.

Cheers

Tb9

You cant run normal fuel it must be premium. They run crap and get poor mpg on standard fuel servicing is pretty cheap just oil and filter change every 9k which comes to around £100 for me from a jap specialist who can update the digital service history

I average about 280-300 miles on a tank, but depending how you drive you could get less/more.
Tyres are about £90 a corner and last quite well to be fair, I had Michelin Ps3s on my mk1 and they lasted about 16k and that was driven 50/50 cruising/going for it.
I'd do oil every 5k and this costs about £50 for decent stuff.
Around 50k miles in the mk1 is when the chain /VVT might start to go, so I would aim to get one with it already changed.
If not the kit is about £300 from the states. There is a guide on how to do it somewhere, it's obviously quite in depth and you need the timing tools.
Mazda did mine for about £350

How much is the one you're looking at - I'm playing with the idea of selling mine. Same year, less mileage FMSH

Also - 2008 cars, don't they have the revised part anyway?

I don`t find the MPS to be expensive to run but it all depends on what you drive at the moment. If you could let us know, we might be able to give you an idea of the difference in outgoings.

Welcome

fuel is the cheapest part of ownership i think even though ive spent £4500 in 11 months haha
Depreciation is worse ive found .

As for servicing , thank god for eurocarparts/carparts4less + cashback along with camskill etc for tyres .Brakes last quite a while , front tyres not so much if you drive the car properly that is.

As a whole ,if you discount the design faults (ko4,vvt) and choose your mods wisely you will have a very reliable and very very fast car .

Thanks for welcome and the input.

Per Month:

£250 ish Fuel.
£40 Tax (ouch!)
£10-£15 for oil and Filter, based on my millage (Over Est) going to do about 7-8k every 27weeks or so.
£10 - for Chain change every 50-55k
£20 - For Rust prevention/contingency? Wax Oil.
£40 - Insurance (Current quote - Had a company car for 5 years so 0 NCB, so this will go down)

£375.00

£400 PM would be a good idea of actual running......Sound about right?

The one I am thinking of getting Tuesday, depending on condition, and how much rust I can see (My biggest worry) I am going to offer around 6k. I am down south near Guildford.

Not sure about the revised part TorqueSteer? However will look this up, as I do further research.

Currently driving a V old Astra 1.6(Cost me nothing apart from a replacing the Windscreen/full exhaust), but this is the stop gap between having a company car, that was a fully expensed so never really worried about costs. Bottom line that cost me £280 pm from the tax man! However never put a smile on my face! Been given the permission too get anything I like with the advisory it can have the kids in the back. MPS is ticking lots of boxes! Smile being the biggest atm. Need to sort out "the pocket", then we are go go go.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum. You'll find for the first few months of ownership that your costs are higher due to enjoying or modifying the car lol
