Hi all, just bought my mk1 mps from a garage on the 23rd after falling in love with it during a test drive. On the drive home however i stopped at a petrol station and noticed a bit of rattle on idle. After opening the bonnet and having a look I noticed the noise was coming from the timing chain area, quick google search later lead me to a topic on the forum about the earlier MK1 have issues in this area. Had a few mechanic friends listen to it and they are pretty certain I have a stretched timing chain/faulty tensioner. After giving the garage a call they want me to bring the car for them to look at. Thing is I know the price the repair will cost and very much doubt that after knocking £600 of the price of the car, they will do a proper repair. Anyway hopefully they do but thought I would ask if anyone has bought the car from a dealer and had this work done before? I work with a Mazda master tek who said he can do the work for me if I bought the parts so I'm considering this as an option. Not the best start as an MPS owner  but hopefully all this is resolved in the coming weeks!

They have to sort it for you BY LAW! You'll need chain, tensioner, crank bolt and washer plus vvt.
If they do a bad job, its going to be there problem again as you're covered by trading standards and the sale of goods act.
You'll want a receipt of each part fitted.

Sale of goods act my friend. As Spammy says, they have to sort it for you, regardless of what discount they gave you. The ONLY reason they would be exempt is if you knowingly bought the car with the defect declared at a discount, which doesn't sound like it's the case.

Quick forum search for 'sale of goods act' will give you references to the actual clauses and wording that you can go to the garage with

Good luck

Cheers for the advice guys! I'm an aircraft mechanic inspector by trade and alot of the people I work with are ex car mechanics so It comes in handy for stuff like this. I'm going to request all the parts they remove for the repair are shown to me as proof that the new ones are fitted. I've got a feeling that they will try and do an oil change and flush to try and mask the noise but i'll not accept the car until I have seen the defect parts and had a thorough check in the area. Apart from this problem the car is in top condition and can't wait to get stuck in about it! I definitely want an SRI and exhaust system done so hopefully they fix the car quickly!

Welcome to the forum mate.

I'm in the exact same boat, I bought my 6 almost a month ago and it's always been noisy on start up, but I thought nothing of it, I've took the cam cover off and it shows the scars where the chains been slapping, I need to ring the garage as soon as they open to get it dealt with. :(

Good shout asking to see the defective parts though

Sorry to hear I'm not the only one with this problem :( . I gave the car a bit of a boot this morning on the way to work and I could hear a sort of vibration when over 4000 rpm with my foot down. Do you think this is due to the timing chain problem or something else? It drives fine when taking it easy just under hard acceleration it makes the noise. Not sure if its down on power as I've not drove one prior but it feels fine just the noise bothers me. Hopefully get all this mess sorted soon though.

See if vibrates whilst parked up, just give it some beans in neutral. It could be the exhaust or a heat shield etc. My cat heat shield vibrates when I let off accelerator at about 3k. Very annoying..

It could also be boost hoses are loose. check all the clamps from the intercooler to the turbo, try the free stuff first to try and pinpoint the problem, it may not be that serious :)
