Winter Tyres and Chris Knott

Hi, I'm often asked on club forums (and Facebook groups) about switching to winter wheels/tyres and whether an insurer will charge extra if you do.

As it's getting to that time of year again I thought I'd just reassure any Chris Knott clients that the insurers we use don't usually charge for this. However, if you are thinking of swapping your wheels we do have to log when you make the switch and then again when you go back to normal - so please let us know on 0800 917 2274.

Thanks,
Nick

If the winter tyres are on a different set of OEM wheels and the same wheel and tyre size as the "summer" tyres, why do you have to tell your insurers? Its the same wheel and the same tyre size. Other than a different brand of tyre it is as it came out the factory.

Just for the record, when getting quotes or renewing, I always say that during the winter the car will run on winter tyres. Therefore, I see no reason to phone up and say when I actually swap them over.

That's fine BigDunc, as you say 'if the tyres are on OEM wheels' but to keep costs down sometimes alloys wheels are replaced with steels on the winter set or non-OEM and that could be classed as a modification. Logging it protects you from any comeback if there's an accident and an insurer says the wheels are not declared.

Thanks for the clarification.

On both my MPSs I managed to get a second set of OEM wheels relatively easily. The first from someone who had upgraded to aftermarket and the second from a car being broken.
