Hello, Do you provide temporary cover (24 hours or more) for motor vehicles? I have a vehicle that is currently on SORN however I wish to transport it to an MOT garage for inspection. Please let me know. Regards, Benneth. |

Hi Benz, Obviously I am not Chris Knot, but a few thoughts for your info. it is possible to get temporary insurance, but it is outrageously expensive compared to an annual policy. I assume that the car may be sold, or is likely to remain SORNed for some time? Get a price for temp insurance, but also, if you are likely to be keeping the car and it is likely to be on the road with a year, get a price for a year and ask if you can suspend cover (with a proportional discount off next years renewal) after the test until you want to tax the car. Also, consider getting a classic policy, for say 1,000 or 1,500 miles. I have just got 3,000 miles of cover for my MX5 for £120. Bear in mind a temporary policy for a day may be a significant proportion of this, it has to be better value, if the car will be taxed in the next 12 months. When I was in your position a few years ago, it was cheaper for me to hire a trailer to take the car to a test garage than it was to buy insurance for one day. In my case, I happened to own a suitable tow car, but if you dont, then this may be a more expensive option. Another possibility is to add it on to your existing policy. Most insurers will cover two cars for up to a month, so if you buy before you sell, you can have both on the policy for a short time. Obviously there is a cost to this, but it may be possibly to add your other car to your main policy for a day. Good luck, I am sure you will find a way. |

Hello Big Dunc, Thank you for your comprehensive comment. I have tried to get cover from my current insurer but the best quote they could offer was £585 for 12 months upon what I had already paid them which I thought was very steep! Yes the car is very likely to remain SORNed for the time being with no intention of selling. I originally wanted to hire a trailer but I do not have a suitable tow car for the trailer. Hiring a flat bed truck would be very expensive I thought and so it was. I would consider the classic car cover but the car is only just over 10 years old so does not meet the minimum age criterion of 15 years. I need a days cover to get it to the garage for an estimated cost of MOT and Service and depending on the outcome, I may then consider permanent insurance and tax. You won't happen to know insurance companies that may offer 24 hour cover? |

Can you ask the garage to collect it and return it, then it would be covered under their trader's insurance for the duration it was on the road (as I understand it). Might cost a little more, but probably less than the temp insurance thing. |

From a quick Google search it seems that both Aviva and The AA do 1 day car insurance policies, no idea on prices though. |
