So Ive bought my new Mazda 3 MPS at what seems like a steal of a price link below:

Any advice on stuff to watch out for for new owners? Anyone else based up around Glasgow?

Hello and welcome :)

50k miles = replace VVT.
Budget £400 for the parts (not from a main stealer!) and maybe £200 fitting - preferably someone who has done an MPS before.

I can't see the list price on your link, but I'm wondering if there is an opportunity for your to negotiate it based on the feedback and information here on the forum.
For example in the Buyer's Guide thread, Dunc posted some detailed information about the VVT and service schedule.

The owner's manual shows some particular items including engine air filter, spark plugs, engine coolant, brake fluid and gearbox oil to be changed at 72 months / 54,000 miles. Both of which this vehicle has gone past. Has it got FSH with a record of this?

On the VVT front there are many who run their vehicle until it gives them a sign that the actuator, chain and associated parts (see kit here from one supplier) need changing. If you subscribe to the principle of pre-emptive maintenance then you'd change it around 50k miles.
Dealership pricing for this is likely to be at least the £1200 Dunc stated (in 2014), maybe you can leverage the seller with this. The alternative would be that if it slips timing while you have the car under warranty it will cost, I don't know, a good few times more than that.

You can google around for various "MPS VVT noise" videos to get an idea of what to listen for on a cold startup to give you some confidence the chain hasn't stretched excessively. This is the most practical check for a Mk 2.

Hopefully someone with a bit more experience will also offer opinion in this case, as buying and selling is not really my forte.
