Hi guys.
I'm Joe. 24 and from Liverpool

Currently own a 06 facelift Mini Cooper s that I've owned for two years. Currently up to 212bhp and 252nm torque. Love it but I need something bigger and abit nippier

I've liked the Mazda 3 mps for years now. So I'm going to take the plunge and get one bought

Now, do I get a mk1 or mk2?
It will be getting tuned, probably around the 350hp mark

Pro's and cons of each?
Obviously the mk1 is cheaper, and the money saved could go straight into mods.
I kind of prefer the looks of a mk2 but not by a lot.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The 3 mki has a rawer feel to it and is a bit wild, in a good way.
The mkii is more refined and bit of a comfort car, doesn't feel as beastly as it should

Thanks for the advice.
Thinking it will be a mk1 overall then. Found a lovely pear white one for sale quite local to me. I'll go have a nose this week some time

As for the tax, I don't see it being that much of a problem. Think I would be paying it monthly anyway so for about £50 a month for the mk1 compared to £30 a month for the 2. It's only around £20 difference so wouldn't bother me too much.

I think all the white mk1's are facelifts, ive never seen a non-facelift in white anyway.

Would be interesting to know the insurance difference between the Mini and the MPS.Usually a pleasant surprise, considering.

Mini with all mods declared is £700 a year on the nose
Quotes for a mk1 have been about £550 and a mk2 about £600 :)

Errrmmmm... try £490 tax if you pay outright. £539 if you pay for 6 months as one offs, £514 monthly

Yup. Just re-taxed mine (white mk1 facelift) at this cost.
Only went for 6 months though as will likely look to sell up by then unfortunately.. )-;

Mk2 has a much stiffer chassis and better suspension, so if you get a mk1. Also has extra mountings on the steering rack to improve feel. The mk2 has aero addons under the floorpan which make it a lot more stable at high speed. The gearing on the mk2 is slightly longer too. Once you start mapping there's little difference in the power delivery as they are mechanically almost exactly the same engine, the real difference being the Volvo ECU used on the mk2 being a lot more advanced to provide the lower emissions - also better economy on closed loop. Oh, and you don't need to change the exhaust system on the mk2 unless you're going over 350bhp as it's 2.7" but the smaller mk1 starts restricting around the 310 mark, although not by a huge amount.
