Hi everyone!

Thought I would introduce myself here as I plan to view (and most likely buy) a 3MPS this weekend. Providing I do get the car, I plan to be quite active here on the forums, much as I was when I owned an MX5 and was quite a regular on mx5nutz.

I could however do with some :help: and advice when I go to view the car this weekend. I'll avoid putting up the actual ad and instead include key points;

- 2008, 49,000 miles
- MOT claimed until 5/17 on ad, previous MOT showing as 9/15 on HPI check (no advisories, thankfully)
- Cat D recorded, repaired and professionally inspected. My understanding is it was a rear bump, little damage.
- 'slight remap' giving the car a claimed 300hp and boost gauge, no other mods.
- Currently SORN

Given the info provided above, the Cat D seems like the obvious worry. However I will be inspecting this thoroughly and would expect receipts if 'professionally' repaired. My worries are the fact the MOT dates conflict between the sellers ad and the HPI check. Also the 'slight remap'.. If it has not been done professionally that would worry me.

So really overall just looking for advice guys! Given the above, what do you think? Any tips for buying an MPS in general? I've already read a few buying guides but really interested in the advice of a few owners :)

Cheers,

Karl

Hi and welcome.
Just a quick reply for now.
Find out who mapped it, if totalmps, bbr, RStuning or turbopacs, walk away. If they don't know, walk away. These are a little tricky to map and can cause catastrophic engine failure if not done right.

BBR? Really? I thought they were an excellent tuning company!

Good advice however, thank you.

300bhp with no other mods seems quite high to me, that plus a boost gauge makes me think boost tuning.

I wouldn't worry about posting up the actual ad: it's highly unlikely that anyone on here is going to pip you to the post and there is a good chance that we may have seen the car before.

Hmm.. Wouldn't want a blown turbo right after getting the car! Really need more info on this map.

Here's the ad; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282103526360

They're good with the likes of the MX5, as for the MPS, not so much, they're all talk and stupidly expensive. Plenty of previous threads on here regards bbr.
Also, as Sean says, 300 is a bit of a dream number with just a map, more like 270-280 at a push

You can check the MOT status of a car here:
https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

This normally lists the advisories from the previous MOT as well.

Looks like it's 29/9. Slightly concerning the date on the ad is incorrect, yet not too concerning considering it passed last year with no advisories.

The owner claims the map was done by a previous owner and doesn't know much about it other than its 'mild' and 'around 300hp'. My gut is telling me that chances are nothing has been done to it.. However if I choose to buy it, I'll have to take it to a well known tuning specialist to understand what is going on and get it set right.

It could well be locked which can become a bit of a problem.
If you don't know the history of the map, I wouldn't even go to go look at the car personally.
There are no tuning specialists in the uk for the MPS other than Justin tbh, not heard a single good outcome from other tuners in the uk in all the time I've been on here (5 years near enough now)

don't think its beds he didn't have tints an don't think it was the aero model,

OP I would not bother look somewhere else Mild remap no other mods an then saying 300bhp in the same sentence just means he either believes it is or he is just lying in the advert

Probs have a hard time seeing 300bhp with some supporting mods too with a "mild" map

Then again thats just me, people cant really decide for you.
